Kilkieran High Crosses

Kilkieran High Crosses

Southeast Ireland | County Kilkenny

Kilkieran High Crosses are situated on the site of an early Christian monastery founded by St Ciarán, about 8 km north of Carrick-on-Suir in County Kilkenny. Nothing remains of the old monastery. There are three complete crosses dating from the 9th century, one incomplete, a standing stone, holy well and bullaun stones. The North Cross (or Tall) has a circular base, is 3.5 meters high and it has very short arms what makes it unique between other Irish High Crosses. The West Cross is 3.55 m tall, is decorated with interlace ornamental motifs and has a conical cap. The East Cross (Plain) is 2.8 m high and has the same shape and conical cap as West Cross but has no decoration.
